Re: Liverpool Football Club!
Liverpool FC Squad - 2007-2008
3. Steve Finnan

Position: Right-Back
Age 32
Former clubs: Welling, Birmingham City, Notts County, Fulham
Right-back Steve Finnan signed for Liverpool from Premiership rivals Fulham in the summer of 2003.
Mr Consistency had no problems adapting to the Premiership, and in 2001-02 he was selected in the PFA Team of the Year ahead of the likes of Gary Neville.
Gerard Houllier was suitably impressed and swooped ahead of the 2003-04 season.
4. Sami Hyypia

Position: Centre-Back
Age : 35
Former clubs: Pallo-Peikot, KuMu, MyPa Anjalankoski, Willem II
Hyypia's contribution to the British game has not gone unnoticed in his homeland, where he's been crowned footballer of the year six times.
It's hard to believe he cost Liverpool just £2.5million from Dutch outfit Willem II back in May 1999.
Incredibly, he played every minute of 57 consecutive European games for the Reds from November 2001 to February 2006.
5. Daniel Agger

Position: Centre-Back
Age : 24
Former clubs: Rosenhoj, Brondby
Birth Place: Hvidovre, Denmark
Liverpool signed Danish international centre-back Daniel Agger for more than £5million in January 2006, making Agger Denmark's most expensive export.
The 2006-07 campaign saw Agger force his way into the Liverpool first-team, and he even won PFA Player of the Month for September.
A 35-yard belter against West Ham did his kudos no harm, with the strike winning Liverpoolfc.tv's Goal of the Season.
Denmark's top players and managers voted him Player of the Year for the first time.
6. John Arne Riise

Position: Left Back, Left Midfielder
Age : 28
Former clubs: Aalesund, Monaco
Norwegian defender John Arne Riise arrived from Monaco in the summer of 2001 for a fee of about £4million.
Riise was an integral part of Monaco's 1999-00 championship-winning side, prompting interest from a host of Premiership clubs.
It was he who opened the scoring against Chelsea in the 2005 Carling Cup final with a volley on 45 seconds - the fastest goal in the fixture's history.
During the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan, Riise provided the cross for Steven Gerrard to head home on 54 minutes - and in doing so helped trigger the greatest comeback European football has ever witnessed. The fact his penalty was saved by Dida in the shoot-out is now a historical insignificance.
7. Harry Kewell

Position: Winger
Age : 30
Former clubs: Leeds United
Harry Kewell joined the Reds amid a wave of excitement in the summer of 2003.
The starlet was part of their 1997 Youth Cup triumph alongside Paul Robinson and Jonathan Woodgate - by which stage he'd already made his senior and international debuts.
Kewell went on to be voted PFA Young Player of the Year in 2000, but the highpoint of his Leeds career came the following season when he helped them reach the Champions League semi-finals.
Having turned down a move to Manchester United, the three times Oceania Player of the Year made his Reds debut in front of the Kop against Chelsea on August 17, 2003.
Kewell went on to score 11 goals in 49 games in his first season at Anfield.
8. Steven Gerrard (C)

Position: Midfielder
Age : 28
Former clubs: -Nil-
Liverpool's inspirational captain is arguably the most complete footballer in the world. Power, pace, touch and a never-say-die attitude; Stevie G has it all, and rarely have these attributes been more apparent than when he skippered the Reds to 2005 Champions League glory in Istanbul.
Like several of his teammates, the Scouse sensation has collected just about every medal at club level - except the Premier League. He's also captained his country and in 2006 was awarded an MBE by the Queen.
Gerrard's LFC love affair began when he was spotted playing for Whiston Juniors aged nine. Eight years later, after a period as a trainee, he signed his first professional contract.
By now regarded as the complete box-to-box midfielder, he was instrumental in the Reds winning a unique treble in 2001. With the Worthington and FA Cups already in the bag, Gerrard was one of the scorers in an unforgettable 5-4 UEFA Cup final victory over Alaves. It came as no surprise when the man nicknamed the Huyton Hammer was voted PFA Young Player of the Year.
Just when it seemed things couldn't get any better for the Scouser, they did. On May 25, 2005, under new boss Rafa Benitez, Gerrard lifted the club's fifth European Cup.
Having already brought Liverpool back from the brink earlier in the campaign with a last-gasp strike against Olympiacos, the skipper helped inspire the greatest comeback of all time in Istanbul.
No one believed the Reds could overturn AC Milan's 3-0 half-time lead - until Stevie G's 54th minute header, that is.
His heroics earned him the title of UEFA's Most Valuable Player, as well as a nomination for the prestigious Ballon D'Or award. He would come third in the latter, behind Ronaldinho and countryman Frank Lampard.
The 2005-06 campaign culminated with another FA Cup win in Cardiff, with West Ham providing the opposition. If 1953 will always be remembered as the Stanley Matthews final, then 2006 will surely go down as Gerrard's day.
The skipper twice breached Shaka Hislop's net, including a dramatic equaliser in the dying moments to send the game into extra-time and, ultimately, penalties. This 35-yard volley was voted Match of the Day's goal of the season.
Gerrard - who's played in just about every position for Liverpool - had now scored in four major finals, something no English-based player had ever done.
In December 2006, Gerrard was awarded an MBE, which he later collected from the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
Gerrard was more than happy to pen a new four-year contract to keep him at Anfield until 2011.
He enjoyed a mixed start to 2007-08, scoring an unstoppable free-kick against Arsenal on his 400th appearance.
9. Fernando Torres [My Siggy too]

Position: Striker
Age : 24
Former clubs: Atletico Madrid
Fernando Torres became Liverpool's record signing on July 4, 2007.
At 17 years and 68 days, he was Atletico's youngest ever player. Within a week he'd scored his first goal in a match against Albacete.
Meanwhile, he was still making waves on the international scene. Torres was top scorer and player of the tournament in the 2001 European Under-16 Championships and 2002 European Under-19 Championships, both of which Spain won.
The frontman bagged 13 goals during his first season in the Spanish top flight, earning him a first under-21 cap for his country.
The 2003-04 campaign proved to be a momentous one for Torres. Not only did he score 19 goals in 35 league appearances, but he was also handed the club captaincy. At 19, he was the youngest skipper in Atletico's long and illustrious history.
The player nicknamed El Nino (The Kid) because of his youthful appearance was selected for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where he scored three goals.
The following year, in May 2007, Torres hit the headlines when he revealed the phrase 'We'll Never Walk Alone' on the inside of his captain's armband during a match between Atletico and Real Sociedad. Two months of speculation and paper talk ensued before the striker was finally unveiled at Melwood.
He left Atletico with a record of 82 goals in 214 league appearances.
He is currently one of the few players who scored Hat-tricks in successive home league games for the Reds.
He is the only player to have scored in 7 successive home league games for Liverpool, and it is only his 1st season. He could also extend it to 8 when the Reds play Man City 3 weeks from now.
He also has his own website - http://www.fernando9torres.com/
10. Andriy Voronin

Position: Striker
Age : 29
Former clubs: Borussia Moenchengladbach, Mainz, Cologne, Bayer Leverkusen
Liverpool secured the services of striker Andriy Voronin on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in July 2007.
In March 2005, the striker featured in the Bundesliga side's 6-2 aggregate defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League.
Voronin, who appeared in the 2006 World Cup, left the BayArena with a record of 21 goals in 71 league games.
3. Steve Finnan

Position: Right-Back
Age 32
Former clubs: Welling, Birmingham City, Notts County, Fulham
Right-back Steve Finnan signed for Liverpool from Premiership rivals Fulham in the summer of 2003.

Re: Liverpool Football Club!
11. Yossi Benayoun

Position: Midfielder
Age : 28
Former clubs: Hapoel Be'er Sheva, Maccabi Haifa, Racing Santander, West Ham United
Israeli captain Yossi Benayoun signed from West Ham on July 12, 2007.
In 2000-01 he helped lead Haifa to their first title in seven years, winning the division's most valuable player in the process.
The following campaign brought another title-winner's medal but it was to be his last in his homeland. After four seasons, 130 appearances and 55 goals for Haifa, the midfielder was on his way to northern Spain and Racing Santander.
West Ham reportedly paid £2.5million for the winger in the summer of 2005, though he instantly repaid some of his fee with two assists against Blackburn Rovers on the opening day of the season.
Benayoun quickly established himself as one of the Premiership's best right-sided midfielders.
12. Fabio Aurelio

Position: Left-Back, Left-Midfield
Age : 29
Former clubs: Sao Paulo, Valencia
Fabio Aurelio became the first Brazilian to sign for Liverpool in July 2007.
The 2001-02 season saw Aurelio help Valencia win their first title in 31 years.
From there he established himself as one of La Liga's best left-backs, bagging 10 goals during the 2002-03 campaign.
Having fulfilled his six-year contract at the Mestalla, Aurelio joined Liverpool on a Bosman free on July 5, 2007.
14. Xabi Alonso

Position: Midfielder
Age : 27
Former clubs: Real Sociedad, SD Eibar
Liverpool signed cultured midfielder Xabi Alonso on August 20, 2004 for a fee in the region of £10.5 million.
Alonso swiftly developed into a top-class defensive midfielder with an ability to lay passes few of his contemporaries could spot.
Alonso played a pivotal role in Istanbul when the club won its fifth European Cup. It was he who scored Liverpool's third and equalising goal on 59 minutes, knocking in the rebound from his own missed penalty.
The Spaniard's second season in England was perhaps most notable for his performance against Luton Town in the third round of the FA Cup. With the Reds 3-1 down early in the second half, he scored two corkers, including a 65-yard punt from inside his own half.
Reports afterwards revealed the strike won one lucky fan £25,000. Spookily, the gent had placed £200 on the Reds number 14 scoring from his own half during the 2005-06 season.
Not only did he play in his second European Cup final, he also scored another goal from inside his own half in a match against Newcastle United. Remarkably, it was his first Liverpool strike since the almost identical effort against Luton, and he remains the only modern player to score consecutive club goals from beyond the half-way line.
On June 8, 2007 Alonso penned a new five-year deal to put an end to newspaper talk linking him with a return to Spain.
15. Peter Crouch

Position: Striker
Age : 27
Former clubs: Tottenham, QPR, Portsmouth, Aston Villa, Norwich, Southampton
In July 2004, unable to establish himself at Villa Park, the beanpole forward joined Southampton for a fee of about £2million - and the goals once again started to come.
Despite his prolificacy, Southampton were relegated in 2004-05, meaning yet another transfer was a must if he was to remain in Sven's plans. His destination this time was Merseyside, with Rafa Benitez agreeing a fee in the region of £7million.
The Anfield faithful soon realised they had more than a target man on their hands, with the striker displaying a neat touch and intelligent hold up play. It didn't take long for the Kop to devise the humourous "He's big, he's red, his feet stick out the bed" chant.
In September 2006 Crouch scored perhaps his best ever goal, a stunning scissor kick at home to Galatasaray in the Champions League. It was a trick he would repeat just a few months later against Bolton Wanderers.
A broken nose sustained versus Sheffield United interrupted his second season on Merseyside, though he did go on to net his first club hat-trick against Arsenal in March 2007; one with his left foot, one with his right and another with his head.
16. Jermaine Pennant

Position: Winger
Age : 25
Former clubs: Notts County, Arsenal, Watford loan, Leeds United loan, Birmingham City
Rafa Benitez signed Jermaine Pennant in the summer of 2006 following a long search for a right winger.
The midfielder made his debut aged just 16 in a League Cup match against Middlesbrough on November 20, 1999. It made him Arsenal's youngster ever player, though this record has since been broken by Cesc Fabregas.
The winger's impressive form at St Andrew's was born out by OPTA statistics, which revelead he provided more crosses than any other Premiership player in 2005-06. Despite this, Birmingham were relegated, and another transfer was inevitable if he was to further his career.
17. Alvaro Arbeloa

Position: Defender
Age : 25
Former clubs: Real Madrid, Deportivo La Coruna
Versatile defender Alvaro Arbeloa was brought to Anfield in January 2007.
It took just 21 appearances at Depor to convince Benitez that Arbeloa was the man to challenge Steve Finnan for the right-back slot at Anfield.
Arbeloa's club form for Liverpool finally brought international recognition in March 2008 when he came on with 15 minutes to go as Spain recorded a friendly victory over world champions Italy.
18. Dirk Kuyt

Position: Striker
Age : 28
Former clubs: FC Utrecht, Feyenoord
Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt arrived on Merseyside in the summer of 2006 for a fee in the region of £10million.
Their noses may have been out of joint, but Feyenoord liked what they saw, and in the summer of 2003 they signed Kuyt as a replacement for the out-going Pierre Van Hooijdonk.
Following months of uncertainty over his future, Kuyt signed for Liverpool on August 18, 2006. He left Feyenoord with a record of 83 goals in 122 appearances.
The following week he returned to Holland after being named Dutch Player of the Year. The presentation was made by his late dad Gerrit, who was suffering from cancer.
Kuyt carries out extensive charity work off the pitch. Most notably, he and his wife Gertrude set up the Dirk Kuyt Foundation to help disadvantaged children in his homeland and the Third World. One of the ways the foundation raises money is by selling DK-branded clothes.
19. Ryan Babel

Position: Winger
Age : 22
Former clubs: Ajax
Birth Place: Amsterdam
Dutch international Ryan Babel joined the Reds on July 12, 2007.
In June 2007 the winger was one of the stars as Holland Under-21s won the European Championships on home soil. His two goals included one in the final against Serbia, helping him scoop man of the match.
Babel, who can play on either wing or up front, left Ajax with a record of 14 goals in 73 Eredivisie outings.
20. Javier Mascherano

Position: Midfielder
Age : 24
Former clubs: River Plate, Corinthians, West Ham United
Argentina international Javier Mascherano signed from West Ham on February 20, 2007.
From there he travelled to the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where his performances led to links with several of Europe's top clubs.
West Ham eventually clinched his signature alongside compatriot Carlos Tevez on August 31, 2006. However, he played just seven times for The Hammers before heading north to Merseyside.
Despite the presence of Momo Sissoko, Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Bolo Zenden, the newboy quickly established himself as a regular in the centre of Rafa Benitez's midfield.

Position: Midfielder
Age : 28

Re: Liverpool Football Club!
21. Lucas Leiva

Position: Midfielder
Age : 21
Former clubs: Gremio
Brazilian starlet Lucas Leiva arrived from Gremio in the summer of 2007.
He became the youngest player ever to win the Bola de Ouro. The honour is given to the best player in the Campeonato Brasileiro and has previously been won by Zico, Romario, Kaka and Carlos Tevez.
After announcing he'd beaten a host of top European clubs to Lucas's signature, Reds boss Rafa Benitez said: "He is the captain of the Brazil Under-20 side and won the Golden Boot in his country last year, so we know he has quality and we also believe he has the mentality and the character you need to do well in England.
"He can play as a holding midfielder but he can also get from box to box and so I am looking forward to seeing him score goals for Liverpool in the future.
23. Jamie Carragher (VC)

Position: Defender
Age : 30
Former clubs : -Nil-
The ultimate one-club player, and with one of the biggest hearts in football, Jamie Carragher is Mr Liverpool.
The vice-captain has been instrumental in the Reds' success over the last decade, during which he's made more than 500 appearances.
One of the heroes of Istanbul, it's hard to imagine that famous comeback occurring without him.
His passion, enthusiasm and versatility soon ensured regular starts, whether at right-back, left-back, centre-half or defensive midfield.
Carra was an integral part of Gerard Houllier's treble-winning side of 2001, playing 58 games, most of which were at left-back.
While Carra had always been a first-team regular at Anfield, he'd somehow struggled to get the recognition he deserved. Each new signing was seen as a threat to his place, and the Kop had yet to reveal its dream of a team of Carraghers.
The arrival of new boss Rafa Benitez changed all this, with the Scouser getting the permanent centre-back slot he'd always craved.
Carra was soon being labelled the most underrated defender in the country, not least for his heroics in helping the Reds win the 2005 Champions League.
One of the most iconic images from the club's glorious night in Istanbul is that of him collapsing with cramp after yet another last-ditch interception.
He and Sami Hyypia had formed one of the tightest defensive partnerships in Europe, and it came as no surprise when he was voted Liverpoolfc.tv's Player of the Year.
In July 2005, the defender signed a new four-year deal at Anfield. His loyalty was rewarded a month later when, in the absence of the injured Steven Gerrard, Carra lifted the European Super Cup following victory over CSKA Moscow in Monte Carlo.
There was more silverware at the end of the season despite a 21st minute own goal in the FA Cup final against West Ham. It was the defender's 10th final in as many years - and what better way to prepare for the World Cup.
Unsurprisingly, Carra again committed his future to the Reds in the summer of 2007 by signing another four-year contract.
The summer of 2007 also saw him retire from international football following continued frustration at a lack of opportunities.
It certainly did his club form no harm and six months later he became only the 12th player to make 500 appearances for Liverpool. Carra walked out to a guard of honour which included boss Rafa Benitez when Luton visited Anfield on January 15, 2008. The defender was also made captain for the night at the request of Stevie G.
As if all this wasn't enough, he then wrote a new page in Kop history by becoming the first player to represent the Reds 100 times in continental competition. Fittingly, the milestone was reached in one of Europe's top arenas, the San Siro, as Rafa's Redmen dumped Inter Milan, the runaway leaders of Serie A, out of the Champions League.
25. Pepe Reina

Position: Goalkeeper
Age : 26
Former clubs: Barcelona, Villarreal
Jose Manuel Reina is one of the world's top stoppers with an uncanny knack of saving penalties.
The agile stopper helped Villarreal secure a Champions League spot in 2004-05 season, saving an incredible seven out of nine penalty kicks. It was to be his final deed for the club.
On arriving in Merseyside, the new boy was labelled "the best goalkeeper in Spain" by Rafa Benitez.
What a year it was turning out to be for the young 'keeper. And it was to get even better on December 15 when he and his teammates kept a club record 11th successive clean sheet against Deportivo Saprissa in the World Club Championships.
Reina's first season ended with an FA Cup final against West Ham, and though he made a number of errors in normal time, his habit of saving spot kicks once again made him a hero. Three out of four of West Ham's penalties were blocked and the Cup was heading to Anfield for the seventh time.
Three weeks later in Athens he became only the third player to follow in his father's footsteps by appearing in a European Cup final. Unfortunately, like former Atletico Madrid stopper Miguel Reina Santos, he was on the losing side.
On June 7, 2007 Reina signed a new deal five-year deal at Liverpool.
30. Charles Itandje

Position: Goalkeeper
Age : 26
Former clubs: Red Star 93, RC Lens
Liverpool signed goalkeeper Charles Itandje from Lens in August 2007.
Itandje, who has been known to dance during penalty shoot-outs to put off his opponents, was brought to Liverpool initially as cover for Pepe Reina.
33. Sebastian Leto

Position: Winger
Age : 22
Former clubs: Club Atletico Lanus
Argentine winger Sebastian Leto joined Liverpool in the summer of 2007.
The Reds beat a host of other clubs to his signature, including Real Betis and River Plate.
After signing, Leto told Liverpoolfc.tv: "There were a number of offers in from Argentinian and Spanish clubs, but as soon as Liverpool expressed an interest, it became a very easy decision.
"It is one of the biggest clubs, and they are always playing for so many trophies. Liverpool has such a good image in Argentina - I was always aware of them as a kid."
34. Jay Spearing

Position: Midfielder
Age : 20
Former Clubs : -Nil-
Jay Spearing graduated to Melwood in the summer of 2007 after the best part of a decade at the Academy.
In May 2007, Spearing was voted best player at the Torneo di Renate after a Liverpool under-20s side competed against the likes of AC Milan and Parma.
Reserves coach Gary Ablett said of the petite but combative youngster: "I think he will find that if he advances at this football club, centre-back may not be his position. His understanding and reading of the game in central midfield are there for all to see."
37. Martin Skrtel

Position: Centre-Back
Age : 24
Former clubs: FC Previdza, FC Trencin, Zenit St Petersburg
Slovak international Martin Skrtel arrived at Anfield in January 2008 with a reputation for being a no-nonsense centre-back.
Skrtel's performances during 113 games led to international recognition and interest from a host of European clubs including Valencia, Everton and Spurs.
But it was the Reds who eventually clinched his signature and the Slovak made his debut as a second-half sub against Aston Villa on January 21, 2008.
38. Craig Lindfield

Position: Striker
Age : 20
Former Clubs : -Nil-
Wirral-born striker Craig Lindfield is a product of the Academy who graduated to the first-team squad ahead of the 2006-07 campaign.
He was a key part of the 2006 and 2007 FA Youth Cup winning sides, scoring 12 goals along the way.
Lindfield is still waiting for his senior competitive debut. However, he does have a number of friendly games under his belt, the first of which against Crewe in July 2006 saw him score the game's only goal.
He has also represented England at under-19 level.
